This past weekend, I came upon this building while wandering around the flood damaged Czech Village in Cedar Rapids. The distressed look of the whitewashed brick immediately caught my eye, but getting a good angle from street level was difficult. I settled on this one.

Low tide on a hot day

Yesterday, it was HOT and there was a fire to the east producing lots of smoke that was blowing west towards the Golden Gate. Needless to say, it wasn’t pleasant to be near the bridge. Once I got a little farther north the air quality quickly improved so I stopped at the familiar Mill Valley exit to grab a few perspective shots.

Rail perspective

While wandering around between sets during the late afternoon on Saturday in Cedar Rapids, I grabbed a batch of perspective shots. Why? Because Iowa is super flat so perspective centric vistas abound. Here’s a long shot of a rail line heading out towards a corn processing plant.

The Cedar River

This past weekend we were in Cedar Rapids, Iowa playing music at a three day Czech Festival. To say we had fun would be an understatement–we had a BLAST! A big reason why we were there was because of a massive flood of the Cedar River in 2008 which devastated much of the city including most of the old Czech neighborhood. They’ve been rebuilding and are now pushing to revitalize the area. Here’s a shot of a very placid looking Cedar River taken in the late afternoon from the 16th Ave bridge just outside the Czech Village.
