Edge of a salt marsh

Across the road from where I work, at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, there are salt marshes bordered by salt ponds which are in turn bordered by industrial parks. This is the view looking north. The hill is San Bruno Mountain which looms over the north side of South San Francisco.

Staring at my feet

I recently got a copy of Lightroom 3 for a ridiculously cheap price. I know version 4 just came out, but having never used the program I figured I’d go with the bargain and see if I like it. So far so good! While cataloging images from our 2010 trans-Canada train trip, I ran across this image and decided to try some processing on it in Lightroom. I’d already installed Nik Silver Efex Pro (SEP 1, because SEP 2 doesn’t run on my computer?!?) so it was fairly easy to do the same black and white conversion steps I normally do with SEP 1 in Photoshop. Voilà!

Contrast and an icon

Because of my commute route I have the opportunity to shoot a lot of photos of the Golden Gate Bridge. But, because I’m commuting, the vantages are limited by my desire to get home. Fort Baker is a fave for easy off, easy on the highway.

15 minutes on the bridge in sequence

I stopped at the vista point at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge today on my way home. Here’s the sequence of events.

Walked onto the bridge and got a pedestrian shot.

Took advantage of the bridge vantage and got a cityscape (cropped to) panorama. (Click on the pano shot for a larger view.)

Headed back to the tourist stop and shot some tourists being tourists.

And finally, took a portrait view of the bridge and its shadow.

Tidal pond at low tide

My ISP was having issues yesterday so I couldn’t post, but I did take some photos. This view at the park across the road from where I work has been blogged here several times, but I never caught it with a dynamic cloud cover at low tide. Here it is.

Cityscape after a storm

A storm moved into and out of the Bay Area over the past 24 hours dumping a moderate amount of rain. By the time I left work for my commute home the roads were dry. I figured it might be a good day to take a little side trip down to Fort Baker and grab some photos. Unfortunately, there was a layer of very high clouds filtering the sunlight so I didn’t get the sparkling clear views I was hoping for–but, I was the only out there so I had an enjoyably peaceful 15 minutes of photo fun.

Motel appurtenances

Things have gotten busy of late, and the band is preparing to go out on a 10 day tour, so I’ve been lax with my daily photo stops. Excuses, excuses…. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I scored a copy of Lightroom 3 from B&H for $69! Great deal, but it was back ordered so while I’m waiting for it to arrive I’ve been looking through my messy photo collection planning a much needed organizational attack. Tonight I ran across this image and pulled it out of the stack–probably because the motel room kitchenette seems so tidy.

Neighbors lights at night

Neighbors. In my immediate vicinity, both of the two closest ones like strong, harsh night lighting and more often than not forget to turn them off. Drives me crazy because I like going out into my yard at night to look at the sky. Alas. So I got creative with it last night. And… It’s now 5:30 PM the next day and these lights are still on–they’ve been on all day. Happens all the time. And, yes, I’ve asked.

Upright bass player

I was recently out and about listening to and shooting photos of a band mate’s jazz ensemble. I liked this shot of the bass player and preferred it rendered in black and white.

Harley at sunset

I’ve owned and ridden motorcycles in my lifetime, but I’ve never ridden a Harley. If I were to own one, I could see it looking something like this.
